Vox has just released a video in which they are asking an ecologist about what is really going on with the Koalas, and his answers are really worrying.
The ecologist explains how the recent fires have been worse than any before, and that Australia should not be considered in a natural crisis, but in a war zone.
He adds that about 1 billion animals may have died or will die because of the fires. This is the toughest hit to the wildlife in Australia in recorded history.
More terrifying is that the statistics get worse every couple of days, and there is no end in sight for these fires.
Unfortunately, many of the animals can’t run from the fires, especially when the fires are “crown fires” that go very high, where some species – like Koalas – run to for safety.
Meaning, Koalas, lizards, and other species are just sitting ducks for the fires, and they can not escape.
He then goes on to explain how humans have decimated 95% of the Koalas over the last 200 years with hunting and destroying their habitat, and the recent fires will bring this number to about 99% of the Koalas population.
The Koalas will not become an endangered species, but they are not yet “functionally extinct”. However, the fires are still raging on.
The ecologist then encourages people to read more about the crisis in Australia so we can save the planet from suffering through such a crisis again.
