Just because something is common, doesn’t mean it can’t be great. Like common cat breeds for example.
Some of the most common cat breeds out there are favourites for a reason. So, today I will be writing about some of the most widespread felines out there.
Devon Rex
If I could be a cat, I would probably be this one. This breed is known to be highly intelligent and capable of learning difficult tricks. However, it is rather hard to motivate this feline.
It is a slender, big-eared breed with a unique wavy coat, similar to the Cornish Rex.
Due to their small size (they weigh between 2.0 Kg and 4.0 Kg), they like staying in the highest place available in their territory.
It has been described as “a monkey in a catsuit” due to its mischievous, playful and outgoing nature. It can perform many “canine” tricks such as fetch, heel and can be trained to walk on a leash.
Additionally, if you are looking for a cute cuddle companion, look no further! If this cat imprints onto you, it will love you unconditionally for the rest of it´s life.
Adopting one of these magnificent creatures can range between 60 and 100 Pounds. On the other hand, buying a purebred one can cost you up to 900 Pounds.
Siberian Forest Cat
Going all the way to Russia now, this huge cat is closely related to the Norwegian Forest Cat and is sometimes referred to as the Siberian Forest Cat. These cats
This ancient cat is believed to be the ancestor of all long haired-cats. When they first arrived in the US they caused a lot of confusion. They all looked so different! By this one of the most common cat breeds, looks can differ depending on which part of Russia it originated from.
Siberian Cats moult once or twice a year, the second time being a “light”summer moult. They have the three natural types of fur that a cat can have: awn hair, down hair, and guard hair.This helps protect them from Russia´s freezing climate.
Furthermore, they are known to be exceptionally good jumpers and have great acrobatic skills. This is mainly due to their longer hind legs which causes them to have a naturally lightly curved back,
They are one of the most hypoallergic large cat breeds and generally are not afraid of water.
Siberian cats are appear at least once in Russian folklore, especially a cat named Kotofej Ivanovich .
Persian
An absolute classic in the world of long haired domestic cat breeds. They rae easily on of the most common type of cat breeds.
Persians aren’t only beautiful, they are also one of the best Long haired cat breeds to own if you have boisterous children. Many people worry that getting long-haired cats may not be the best choice if their little ones have grabby hands.
However, worry not. They have a friendly and calm nature and can be very patient.
Being a true favourite, they are not only known for their long haired fluffy fur coat that comes in various colours. Their very large and very round eyes are just adding to their cuteness level.
Siamese
Last but not least, one of the most well known and beloved of all cat breeds.
These small and elegant felines are especially loved for their sky blue eyes and creme fur coats. Maybe this is why they are one of the most common cat breeds.
Similar to the Devon Rex, they imprint on one person and are known to have rather dog-like behaviour. They are known to be intelligent and socially mature cats. TheSiamese breed weighs between 2.0 and 5.0 Kg and most can be purchased for 150 to 400 Pounds.
Health wise they may encounter some problems, particularly mammary tumours and liver diseases. One of their main features is their distinct “meow” which has been compared to the crying of a little baby.
Furthermore, two of the most popular derived breeds of the Siamese are the adventurous Bengal cat and the beautiful Burmese cat.
Maine Coon
Ending our list off with the largest land most common cat breeds, this gentle giant definitely deserves this spot on the list. An all-around talent and a huge hugger with thick, long fur? Sounds pretty awesome to me.
Additionally, they are one of the largest cat breeds in the world, which are well-known for their unique facial structure.
They live well with dogs and other pets. Whether this is mainly because of their calm nature or their large sizes, I am not sure.
This type of long-haired cat breeds has a water repellent coat, so if the kids are on your mind once more… I got you.
Last but not least, Maine coons are intelligent cats. They have even made it into the Guinness World Records book.
