Yulin?? .. The Chinese Dog Eating Festival .. STOP The Torture!

Every year, on the 21st of June. A small city in northern China called Yulin holds an annual “Lychee and Dog Meat Festival”. An infamous Chinese dog eating festival which is known worldwide as the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.

This festival is an annual shameful celebration in which thousands of dogs and cats are killed, tortured, and slaughtered then served on silver plates to be eaten by festival goers

Yulin?? .. the Chinese dog eating festival!

This infamous Chinese dog eating festival started in 2009. It spans about ten days during which, it is estimated that 10,000–15,000 dogs are consumed

This event has drawn waves of criticism from the mainstream media and animal lovers worldwide. Influential figures have lead campaigns around the world in a bid to stop it.

As a result of the pressure, the local government of Yulin has stopped organizing the festival. However, the monstrosity didn’t stop. As vendors continue selling dog meat and the act of eating dog meat continues year-round and is peaking during the summer solstice.

Although the numbers of dogs killed at this ‘dog eating festival’ have been decreasing each year since 2015, The Yulin dog meat festival is the flagship event of the dog and cat meat trade

It’s Not Only about Yulin!!

At its height, the Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival is responsible for 10,000 to 15,000 dog deaths.

As for mainland China the whole year round, The widely reported figure is 10 million dogs killed and eaten each year.

That’s why it should be clear that our concern is not with this festival itself. The Yulin Dog Eating Festival is only the tip of the iceberg as the number of slaughtered dogs at the festival representing less than 0.01% of the Chinese dog meat trade as a whole.

That’s why the main issue should be, The Dog Eating Act

The back and forth skirmishes between the Chinese government and the media are just technicalities. The issue here is not with the festival itself, it is the act of dog eating.

The main concern should be focused on The violent and crime-ridden trade of dog and cat meat.

This trade doesn’t end after Yulin when the cameras leave.

It’s alive all year round. Ending Yulin won’t end dog eating. But ending dog eating will end Yulin.

A festival is no more than spending time with your family and eating traditional foods. This Dog Meat Festival is no different. official or not, they still eat dog meat

The Chinese authorities say there is no action for them to take because Eating Dog meat is not illegal in China

What I’m gonna say is a long shot but worth trying,
The international community should pressure the Chinese government to issue legislations banning eating dog meat and making it illegal

It’s worth mentioning here that in China, they already have those legislations but it is only imposed in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Mainland China is the only area where dog eating is legal

Each and every one of you can write letters to your political representatives, your parliaments, and your leaders.

Ask them to appeal through diplomatic channels with the Chinese government
to end this horrendous act of dog eating.

Throw a rock in this stall lake and to get things moving

A long shot but worth trying, you won’t lose a thing

We should focus on the end game…
Ending dog and cat eating in China, altogether.

Dog Cruelty in China

The dog meat industry in China claims that it has more than 100 registered ‘dog meat farms’ where they farm dogs for their meat

But in 2015, Animals Asia has conducted a four-year undercover investigation into the Chinese dog meat trade exposing these claims as false.

None of its registered ‘farms’ had more than 30 dogs on-site and such small scale operations cannot possibly meet such a demand.

So where do all these millions of dogs slaughtered every come from?

Some dog meat farms had even been registered under multiple names to manipulate figures and cover-up the widespread dog and cat thefts which sustains this dirty industry.

Dog Meat Trade in Asia

It is estimated that 13 to 16 million dogs are eaten in Asia on a yearly basis.

It’s not strange to go into a restaurant in North-Korea, South-Korea, Vietnam or China and find Dog flesh on the menu

In China alone, around 10 million dogs and 4 million cats are slaughtered for the dog meat trade each year.

Most of these dogs and cats are stray creatures of all shapes and sizes. Some of them are family pets still wearing their collars.

Dog traders snatch them from the streets and force them into tiny cages.

Last year, It has been reported by The Daily Mail that many government officials in southern areas of China are in cahoots with the dog meat industry giving the rescued dogs back to them.

Many of these weak helpless dogs suffer broken limbs as they are transported vast distances, without food or water.

After a very long exhausting journey, they finally arrive at the dog meat markets, injured and dehydrated.

In a merciless act, they are forced to watch in terror as other dogs are bludgeoned to death or thrown still alive into boiling water to remove their skins.

How can you help?

Ending the Yulin festival won’t end dog meat eating, but Ending dog meat eating will End Yulin. The focus now must be on the dog eating act and the year-round trade in dog meat.
