Last November, the firestorms ravaged through Australia, killing millions of animals in the process. Most estimates are that the fires killed more than 1 billion animals, which is a devastating hit to the wildlife in Australia and one that the country will take a long time to recover from.
But when the fires reached where Gary Wilson and Julie Willis live, they decided to risk everything to save as many animals as possible.
The couple is wildlife carers and they know how to take care of animals, but staying in their wooden house during the fires was a huge risk. A risk they knew someone had to take in order to protect those animals.
When the animals they had released into the wild before saw the fires, they panicked and ran back home since it was the only safety they knew, and this was probably the decision that saved their lives.
At one point, the couple had about 30 animals around the house to take care of.
They explained how they see it:
” If we don’t do it, no one will, and if no one does, these animals will die”
