A rescue organization heard of a dog sitting all alone shaking out of fear. The dog, holly, was in a high kill shelter and was traumatized from all that she saw at the shelter.
So when the rescuers tried to save her, she was so terrified that she lunged forward every time that they tried to put a leash on her to save her.
Even though they have rescued a lot of dogs, they thought that this one was very special.
Holly was so afraid that when the leash was around her neck, she continued biting it; she didn’t want to be hurt ever again.
Rescuers knew that they had to make her feel safe and comfortable, first, so they can gain her trust.
To gain her trust, the rescuers let her bite the leash and shout at them. They waited patiently until Holly did what she wanted to do.
When she stopped biting and shouting, they could finally catch her. However, this was only the first step; Holly was still afraid and would act aggressively when they petted her for several minutes.
Then something unexpected happened, Holly calmed down but tears began to fall from her eyes. Holly cried because she hasn’t experienced love for a very long time, instead, she was traumatized when she saw the death of other dogs in the shelter living in constant fear.
Because of this group of rescuers, she started to trust humans again. After her rescue, Holly changed from the terrified dog that she was to a dog who isn’t afraid anymore and loving towards others.
