Jayden Dufford knew he and his ex-girlfriend were not on the best terms, but he had no idea she would take her frustrations on his innocent dogs in the cruelest way.
He and Lauren Burge, his ex, shared an apartment and they agreed he would leave the apartment when he comes back from basic training. He also left her his two dogs, Angel and Maxy, to take care of them until he gets back and move from the apartment along with the dogs.
When he got back after 10 weeks of army training, he was perplexed to not find the dogs in the apartment.
He had come to the apartment to pack his things and move from the apartment with the dogs, and he had brought along his sister and a police officer for moral support.
He asked his ex where were his dogs, and she simply replied ‘in the bathroom’. Brooklyn, the sister, then asked while in shock ” What? Why are they in the bathroom?’”
Unfortunately, the worst was yet to come.
Brooklyn rushed into the bathroom where she found Maxy in one corner. The dog was very malnourished as if it hadn’t eaten anything for weeks.
Maxy was on the ground by the door, and he was jumping all over me. I just started crying, and I was trying to look around for the other one.”
Brooklyn, recalling what happened.
Unfortunately, Angel, the second dog, was in much worse shape.
“I screamed bloody murder, ‘I think one of them is dead!’”
[Angel] was lifeless, hanging on to dear life, was just skin and bone not moving
They thought the dog was dead. The siblings immediately rushed the dogs out of the apartment and fled to the car.
. “I carried my best friend out to the car to give her the love and the care for the night that she lived”
Unfortunately, they didn’t rush the dog to emergency care and instead tried reviving the dog with fortified foods and vitamins.
By the next morning, they decided to rush her to the vet, but it was already too late.
Angel died in Brooklynne’s Arms.
Her starving had caused internal bleeding which was fatal to the already weak dog.
Needless to say, they pressed charges against Lauren, and she was charged with animal cruelty, punishable with a $750 fine and up to six months in prison.
Meanwhile, the siblings have started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Maxy’s veterinary care expenses.
